Recent Developments |
Trainer Bill Mott indicated there was no Preakness Stakes (GI) in the immediate plans for Blue Burner. "Not after an effort like that," Mott said. "That was his second race in a row (like that). I gave him the benefit of the doubt after the Wood Memorial (GI) (when he ran fifth), but now we've got to take a tougher look."

Derby Starter Anlysis By: Steve Fugitte |
Is not fast enough to win the Derby but does have better stamina than most here. Dynamite connections have a puzzling horse here in that he has a decided stamina edge but probably can't complete the course in quick enough time to win. Speed figures on this runner are actually deceptively fast and famous horseman Mott has never been one to just run one in the Derby. So he must like this colt's future and that alone is scary. Still haven't seen a performance yet that will win this so I am going to play against and hope he doesn't speed up. |

Pedigree Anlysis By: John Gaver III |
Born: January 23, 1999; Dosage Index: 3.33
The Kinsman Farm homebred Blue Burner is a son of the relatively young stallion French Deputy, a sire of four crops and 13 stakes winners including Japanese champion Kurofune, an earner of $3 million; $2.9 million-earner Nobo Jack; Grade I winner Left Bank; Queue, a Grade II winner on turf and Bella Bellucci, a contender for the 2002 Kentucky Oaks (GI) and a Grade II stakes winner. He is a a half-brother to the Irish-bred stakes-winner Haleakala (IRE) and is out of the graded stakes-placed Alydar mare Haiati, a half-sister (and very similarly bred) to Cara Rafaela, a multiple graded stakes winner. She is also a half-sister to the very quick Grade II stakes winner Abaginone. Blue Burner's strong distaff family traces back to such quality black-type winners as Torsion, Muhtathir (GB) and Hook and Ladder, and his dam is by the fine broodmare sire Alydar, who finished third in all three legs of the 1978 Triple Crown. Alydar was the sire of 11 crops before his untimely, unfortunate demise and as a broodmare sire he had 293 producing daughters including the dams of the following black-type winners: Breeders' Cup Classic winner Cat Thief, an earner of $3.9 million; Ishino Sunday (Jpn), an earner of $2.6 million; two-time Breeders' Cup Mile (GI) winner Lure, an earner of $2.5 million; Matikane Kinnohosi, an earner of $2.4 million; Wild Bluster (Jpn), an earner of $2.2 million; Bright Sunday, an earner of $1.9 million; and champions Yamanin Paradise, Peintre Celebre and Ajina. Blue Burner is an example of a Northern Dancer (via Vice Regent)-Raise A Native (via Alydar) pedigree cross, or nick, and he has a very strong, stamina-influenced female family, which will no doubt help him stay 10 furlongs.
