Danthebluegrassman shipped to Churchill Downs on April 11, but it was not to begin preparations for the 128th Kentucky Derby, as the son of Pioneering was taken off the Derby Trail after finishing last of eight, beaten some 10 1/2-lenghs by Came Home, in the Santa Anita Derby (GI) on April 6 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. Danthebluegrassman took a right turn when the latches were sprung at the start of the Santa Anita Derby, bumping into Lusty Latin, then he appeared to be very rank when jockey David Flores tried to snatch him up to get him back on course; "Dan" was fighting both bit and rider while in tight quarters on the clubhouse turn and had little impact in the race after three-quarters of a mile which was run in 1:10 4/5. "It ws pretty rough on old Dan," trainer Bob Baffert told Daily Racing Form's Steve Andersen after the Santa Anita Derby. "He got his air shut off. I think we're headed for Lone Star (Grade III Lone Star Derby on May 11)." |

Derby Starter Anlysis By: Steve Fugitte |
Last minute entry kicked Windward Passage out and didn't make any friends the way it was handled. Heard he is training brilliantly but he wants the lead and will force a monster speed duel on the front end between at least three runners. Must have been a good party at Pegram's hotel the night they decided to run this guy because anybody who can read the form knows he will be used up on the lead here. Wouldn't bet him with your money at 500-1 and would have much rather seen Windward Passage or another go. |

Pedigree Anlysis By: John Gaver III |
Born: Mar. 31, 1999; Dosage Index: 3.63
Danthebluegrassman is by the young sire Pioneering, who was not much of a racehorse (won two races and $39,426) but has an exceptional pedigree (by the late, great Mr. Prospector out of the blue hen mare Terlingua, the dam of sire-of-sires Storm Cat). Pioneering is the sire of three crops and five stakes winners including Grade III stakes winner Danthebluegrassman; American Century, winner of the listed Bahamas Stakes; Give Praise, winner of the Sorrento Stakes (GII); San Antonio Oaks winner Due To Win Again and the minor stakes winner Pionjewel. Danthebluegrassman is the only stakes winner to date for his dam, Stay With Bruce, who has produced four foals. Stay With Bruce, however, is by the fine broodmare sire Grey Dawn II, a sire of 356 producing daughters and 121 stakes winners including Midnight Bet, an earner of $2.4 million; Waquoit; an earner of $2.2 million; champion It'sallgreektome; millionaire El Senor; Opening Verse, an earner of $1.6 million; two-time champion Silver Patriarch (Ire); Zoffany, an earner of $1.2 million and champion Blushing Katy. Danthebluegrassman's pedigree is an example of a speed-on-stamina cross, or nick. He gets speed in his sire line from Raise A Native (via Mr. Prospector) and his stamina in his distaff family from Herbager, the sire of the turf stayer Tiller and others, via Grey Dawn II, who is an exceptional broodmare sire.
