Recent Developments
Exercise rider Cindy Lerille said the Santa Anita Derby (GI) runner-up was doing fine Sunday (May 5) morning and scheduled to return to his home base in trainer Ted H. West's barn in Southern California later in the day. "I don't know what his plans are, but I would imagine he will get some time off," Lerille said.

Derby Starter Analysis By: Steve Fugitte
Had equipment problems in the Santa Anita Derby but was still able to finish second to Came Home that day - though they got the last eighth very slowly. Still a progressive type colt who is moving forward deliberately for solid West Coast connections here. Picks up '01 Derby winning jockey Jorge Chavez and they will lay mid-pack early before making a middle move. Not convinced he's this good but the price is right and he stands to improve off the Santa Anita Derby. Fringe player is fairly unlikely for the win but can take home a small slice with an improved effort. Would demand a price here.
Pedigree Anlysis By: John Gaver III
    Born: April 13, 1999; Dosage Index: 1.67
Easy Grades is by the recently deceased stallion Honor Grades, a sire of seven crops and 16 black type winners inclduing the turf stayers Honor Glide, a millionaire and Grade I stakes winner; Whata Brainstorm, a graded stakes winner on turf; His Honor, a restricted stakes winner and Gone Fishin, a Grade III stakes winner on grass. He is out of the Easy Goer mare Itsoeasy, who is out of a sister to the stakes winners Sportin' Life, Folk Art and Mashaallah. As a broodmare sire, champion Easy Goer, who earned $4.8 million on the racetrack, is the sire of 37 producing daughters including the stakes winners Desert Hero, Mull Of Kintyre and Easyfromthegitgo. Easy Grades gets stamina from both the top and bottom side of his pedigree, as his sire, Honor Grades, is a representative of the Northern Dancer stallion line and is a sire who throws stayers in his own right, crossed (or nicked) with the Raise A Native sire line, traditionally a source of speed in Throughbred bloodlines. However, Raise A Native also sired Alydar, who was second in all three legs of the 1978 Triple Crown, who in turn sired the classy main track stayer Easy Goer, the dam sire of Easy Grades. From a pedigree perspective, Easy Grades will have little difficulty getting the mile mand a quarter distance of the Kentucky Derby (GI).
