Recent Developments |
In the April 6 Illinois Derby (GII), Fonz's stalked fractions of :23 2/5, a slow half-mile of :48 1/5 and an equally tardy six furlongs in 1:13 - splits carved out by eventual winner War Emblem - and came up empty in the drive in the $500,000, nine furlong race, beaten 10 3/4-lengths over a surface that is traditionally kind to front-runners. The following day (April 7), Fonz's trainer, David LaCroix, said the colt woke up lame in his right hind leg and was shipped back to California to recuperate. "We found a split in his hoof," LaCroix told the Chicago Sun-Times. "He must've stepped on a stone."

Pedigree Anlysis By: John Gaver III |
Born: Mar. 6, 1999; DI: 3.00
The chestnut gelding Fonz's is by Grade I winner Out Of Place, a sire of seven crops to date and 14 black type winners including two-time champion Kristin's Place, Arkansas Derby (GII) winner Certain, San Rafael Stakes (GII) winner Orville N Wilbur's and Derby Trial (GIII) winner Meetyouathebrig. Out Of Place, who won the nine furlong Clark Handicap (GII) at Churchill Downs, is by Cox's Ridge, a stayer and a sire of quality routers such as Sultry Song and Vanlandingham. Fonz's dam, Seton's Encounter, is a minor stakes winner and a producer of seven foals to date, all of which are winners on the racetrack. Fonz's distaff bloodlines are peppered with quality stakes winners, evidenced by the graded stakes winners Cojak and Dixieland Heat in the family of his third dam. Seton's Encouter is by the relatively obscure sire Spring Double, who was at his best on the racetrack going six furlongs to a mile. As a broodmare sire, Spring Double is the sire of 120 producing daughters and 23 stakes winners including Zee Best, Double Wedge, Dance Trainer, Nan's Dancer and La Marejada. While Fonz's Dosage Index is on the high side (3.00), he does get main track staying power from his grand-sire, Cox's Ridge, though Out Of Place and Spring Double, Fonz's sire and broodmare sire, respectively, were horses that seemed to excel at distances from seven furlongs to a mile with a mile and an eighth pushing the distance limitations of both sires. Fonz's has yet to prove he can stay a trip farther than seven-eighths of a mile on the racetrack; he will have to outrun his pedigree to get a mile and a quarter on Derby Day.
