Two More Added To Visa Triple Crown Late Nominee List
April 2, 2002
Add the names of Puzzlement and One Tuff Fox to the list of late nominees to the 2002 Visa Triple Crown, as the connections of both colts paid the necessary $6,000 to make their horses eligible to run in the May 4 Kentucky Derby (GI), the May 18 Preakness Stakes (GI) and the June 8 Belmont Stakes (GI).
The names of both horses were not released yesterday with the other 10 late nominees to this year's Visa Triple Crown, because the New York Racing Associations' racing office was closed on Sun., Mar. 31 and on Mon. Apr. 1 because of the Easter holiday weekend. The horses' nominations were not found until Tuesday (Apr. 2) morning.
The Pine Bluff colt Puzzlement is a Joseph V. Shields homebred who broke his maiden at Gulfstream Park on Mar. 30. One Tuff Fox is an Italo-Erin Stables homebred son of Foxhound who is trained by Richard E. Dutrow, Jr. One Tuff Fox won an allowance race at Fair Grounds on Mar. 4.
The first deadline for Visa Triple Crown nominations was Jan. 19, when 405 horses were nominated for $600 each. Another 10 horses were announced by Triple Crown Productions on Apr. 1 as having been nominated by the second deadline, which was on midnight Mar. 30, 2002.
