Also-Rans Trainer Quotes
D. WAYNE LUKAS (Trainer, Proud Citizen, 2nd) - "I couldn't be happier
with the way this horse ran. Given the pace, he would have had to been a
lot tighter to run down the winner and we're coming off just the one
prep in the Lexington. But he beat some nice horses and I think he'll
beat some more down the line. You'll be hearing more from him."
ROBERT FRANKEL (Trainer, Medaglia d'Oro, 4th) - "When I spoke to Laffit
(rider Laffit Pincay, Jr.) in the paddock, I didn't give him any
instructions. I just told him to ride this horse with confidence. I told
him that he could do anything with the horse. I wanted to give him
confidence with it. The horse broke bad and he got stopped on the turn.
He ran fourth."
During Derby Week, trainer Frankel was asked what horse he feared. He
said he was afraid of War Emblem and his speed getting loose on the
front end.
KENNETH McPEEK (Trainer of Harlan's Holiday, 7th) - "No major excuses;
I'm not surprised with how the race unfolded. I was concerned about the
speed of the race coming in, with no speed horses (slow fraction times).
It's never easy; it is a tough race to win. It was a great job by our
horse; we'll be back."
PAT KEATING (Assistant trainer for Aiden O'Brien, Johannesburg, 8th, and
Castle Gandolfo, 12th) - "Very disappointing. I couldn't see the race
properly from where I was and I'll need to look at the tape, but we were
never in it."
TOM ALBERTRANNI (Assistant trainer, Essence of Dubai, 9th) - "He made a
move coming into the home turn, but we could have done with the sort of
pace that was in the race last year. The others didn't come back to
him."
